‘World News Tonight With David Muir’ Wins Premiere Week of the 2021–2022 Season — As the #1 Newscast on All of Broadcast and Cable Across the Board — Total Viewers, Adults 25–54 and Adults 18–49

“World News Tonight with David Muir” opened the 2021-2022 season as the No. 1 evening newscast across all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.997 million), Adults 25-54 (1.554 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.048 million) for the week of Sept. 20, 2021, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. Leading premiere week for the 2nd year in a row, “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (6.719 million, 1.257 million and 886,000, respectively) by 1.278 million Total Viewers, by 297,000 Adults 25-54 and by 162,000 Adults 18-49.

“World News Tonight” increased its lead over NBC year-to-year in Total Viewers (+9% – 1.278 million vs. 1.175 million), Adults 25-54 (+61% – 297,000 vs. 185,000) and Adults 18-49 (+56% – 162,000 vs. 104,000) to post its largest premiere week margins over NBC in 26 years in Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 and in 20 years in Adults 18-49 — since 1995-1996 and the 2001-2022 seasons, respectively.

“World News Tonight” ranked as the No. 2 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.997 million) on all of television (excluding sports and syndication).

“World News Tonight” has won the last 148 weeks in Total Viewers and 76 of the last 78 weeks in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

For the 2nd week in a row, “World News Tonight” posted week-to-week increases in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+1%/+114,000 – 7.997 million vs. 7.883 million), Adults 25-54 (+7%/+101,000 – 1.554 million vs. 1.453 million) and Adults 18-49 (+5%/+46,000 – 1.048 million vs. 1.002 million).

“World News Tonight” widened its lead over NBC week-to-week in Adults 25-54 (+20% – 297,000 vs. 247,000).

For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.997 million, 1.554 million and 1,048 million, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.777 million, 841,000 and 583,000, respectively) by 3.220 million Total Viewers, by 713,000 Adults 25-54 and by 465,000 Adults 18-49.

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” airs 6:30-7:00 p.m. EDT on ABC. Almin Karamehmedovic is the executive producer of the broadcast.
