‘World News Tonight With David Muir’ Is the Most-Watched Program in the U.S. on All of Broadcast and Cable TV

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 program on all broadcast and cable television in the U.S. in Total Viewers (7.587 million) for the week of June 07, 2021, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. In fact, the ABC evening newscast aired the top 5 telecasts of the week with Monday (7.930 million – No. 1), Tuesday (7.921 million – No. 2), Wednesday (7.475 – No. 3), Thursday (7.386 million – No. 4) and Friday (7.224 million – No. 5).

 

“World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast across all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.587 million), Adults 25-54 (1.429 million) and Adults 18-49 (989,000).  “World News Tonight” defeated “NBC Nightly News” (6.095 million, 1.089 million and 781,000, respectively) by 1.492 million Total Viewers, by 340,000 Adults 25-54 and by 208,000 Adults 18-49.

 

“World News Tonight” widened its advantage over NBC week to week in Total Viewers (+52% – 1.492 million vs. 981,000), Adults 25-54 (+83% – 340,000 vs. 186,000) and Adults 18-49 (+108% – 208,000 vs. 100,000).  “World News Tonight” turned in its largest overall viewer lead over “NBC Nightly News” in 7 weeks and biggest in the key adult news demo in 9 weeks—since weeks of 4/19/21 and 4/5/21, respectively.

 

“World News Tonight” increased its margins over NBC from the same week last year in Total Viewers (+34% – 1.492 million vs. 1.116 million), Adults 25-54 (+431% – 340,000 vs. 64,000) and Adults 18-49 (+230% – 208,000 vs. 63,000).

 

“World News Tonight” scored across-the-board gains week to week: Total Viewers (+280,000/+4% – 7.587 million vs. 7.307 million), Adults 25-54 (+119,000/+9% – 1.429 million vs. 1.310 million) and Adults 18-49 (+118,000/+14% – 989,000 vs. 871,000).  

 

“World News Tonight” ranked as the evening’s No. 1 newscast for the last 63 weeks in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49. In addition, “World News Tonight” has won the last 133 weeks overall in Total Viewers.

 

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (9.042 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 5th consecutive season, based on Most Current Data. In fact, the ABC evening newscast is increasing its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.543 million) from the same point last season (+40% – 1.499 million vs. 1.068 million) to its largest season lead in 26 years—since the 1994-1995 season. “World News Tonight” is beating “CBS Evening News” (5.589 million) by 3.453 million.

 

“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 2nd season in a row. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC by its largest margin in Adults 25-54 (+287,000 – 1.760 million vs. 1.473 million) in 25 years and in Adults 18-49 (+207,000 – 1.230 million vs. 1.023 million) in 26 years—since the 1995-1996 and the 1994-1995 seasons, respectively.

 

For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.587 million, 1.429 million and 989,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.819 million, 885,000 and 643,000, respectively) by 2.768 million Total Viewers, by 544,000 Adults 25-54 and by 346,000 Adults 18-49.

 

NOTE: On Friday (6/11/21), “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.” The retitled telecast is excluded from the weekly and season averages.  CBS’ weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).
