New ABC News/Ipsos Poll Shows the Economy, Inflation, Abortion and Gun Violence Are the Most Important Issues Among Voters

About 61% of Americans Think Abortion Should Be Legal in All or Most Cases, Versus Only 37% Who Think it Should be Illegal

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll released this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” shows 28% of registered voters said the economy was the most important issue, 22% of voters said inflation was the most important issue, 16% of voters said abortion was the most important issue, and 7% said gun violence was the most important issue.

In the poll conducted by Ipsos for ABC News, using Ipsos’ KnowledgePanel®, 49% of Americans who identify as independents have the combination of inflation and the economy above all others as their most important issues.

Additional highlights from the ABC News/Ipsos poll include the following:

  • 42% of registered voters believe that legal immigration to the United States from other countries should be kept at its current level, compared to 31% who believe it should be decreased, and 26% of voters believe it should be increased.
  • 28% of registered voters believe abortion should be legal in all cases, compared to 33% who said it should be legal in most cases, and 31% of voters believe it should be illegal in most cases.
  • 48% of registered voters are also more likely to support a candidate who favors keeping abortion legal and available, compared to 33% of voters who are more likely to support a candidate who favors limiting abortion except to protect the mother’s life.

 

The ABC News/Ipsos poll results above are among registered voters, compared to the digital story which reflects all adults

This ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted using Ipsos Public Affairs‘ KnowledgePanel on Oct. 28-29, 2022, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 729 adults with oversamples of Black and Hispanic respondents weighted to their correct proportions in the general population. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.9 points, including the design effect. Partisan divisions are 28-24-41 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents.
