Upside-Down Magic: Lead Sheet

“UPSIDE-DOWN MAGIC”

An enchanting fantasy movie based on The New York Times bestselling children’s book of the same name, “Upside-Down Magic” follows the adventures of 13-year-old Nory Boxwood Horace as she and her best friend, Reina Carvajal, enter the Sage Academy for Magical Studies. Ebullient newcomer Izabela Rose (“Amazing Stories) and Young Entertainer Award-winner Siena Agudong (“No Good Nick”) bring the roles of Nory and Reina to life in this aspirational and relatable twist on a classic story of friendship.

When the girls arrive at Sage, Reina’s expert ability to harness the power of fire lands her at the top of her class of Flares, but Nory’s wonky magic, and proclivity for turning into herself into a “Dritten”—a half-kitten, half-dragon—instead of a normal cat, lands her in a class for those with upside-down magic, otherwise known as UDM. Stern Headmaster Knightslinger informs Nory that her UDM powers leave her vulnerable to dangerous and evil “shadow magic” and must not be encouraged.

Eternally optimistic, Nory refuses to give up on her powers and sets out to prove herself to Knightslinger, inspiring her fellow UDM classmates in the process. As a dangerous force descends on Sage, Nory and the rest of the UDMs begin to hone their unusual talents and discover that upside-down magic can be just as powerful as right-side up, while Nory and Reina learn that true friendship can overcome any obstacle.

Filmed on location in Vancouver, Canada, and on picturesque Vancouver Island, “Upside-Down Magic,” places a unique new spin on the magic school genre with naturalistic sets inspired by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. In a departure from the traditional boarding school milieu, production designer Bill Boes (“Sleepy Hollow”) incorporated freeform organic shapes and relied on natural materials such as bark, wood and stone to create the magical world of Sage Academy.

In addition to Rose and Agudong, “Upside-Down Magic” stars Kyle Howard (“My Boys”) as Budd Skriff, Max Torina (“Raven’s Home”) as Andres Padillo, Elie Samouhi (“Bizaardvark”) as Elliot Cohen, Alison Fernandez (“Once Upon a Time”) as Pepper Paloma, Vicki Lewis (“Newsradio”) as Professor Knightslinger, Yasmeen Fletcher (“Andi Mack”) as Chandra, Callum Seagram Airlie (“When Calls the Heart”) as Phillip, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams (“Prince of Peoria”) as Professor Argon, Elaine Kao (“American Koko”) as Professor Han, and Amitai Marmorstein (“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”) as Professor Lewis.

“Upside-Down Magic” was written by Nick Pustay and Josh Cagan and directed by Joe Nussbaum (“Gabby Duran & The Unsittables”). Nussbaum, Suzanne Farwell (“Something’s Gotta Give”) and Susan Cartsonis (“Descendants 3”) are executive producers.
