Season to Date, ‘World News Tonight’ Ranks #1 in Total Viewers for the 8th Year in a Row and #1 in Both Demos for 5th Year Straight, and the Broadcast Has Won 278 of the Last 279 Weeks in Total Viewers and 206 of the Last 209 in Adults 25-54

For the 4th year in a row, ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” won the 1st Quarter in Total Viewers (8.120 million), Adults 25-54 (1.133 million) and Adults 18-49 (722,000), based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. In addition, “World News Tonight” has won in all three measures for the 16th consecutive quarter and has stood as the most-watched evening newscast for the 28th straight quarter — since 2Q20 and 2Q17, respectively.

“World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (6.811 million, 993,000 and 660,000) by 1.309 million Total Viewers, by 140,000 Adults 25-54 and by 112,000 Adults 18-49.

“World News Tonight” increased its lead over NBC versus the previous quarter (4Q23) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+21% – 1.309 million vs. 1.081 million), Adults 25-54 (+192% – 140,000 vs. 48,000) and Adults 18-49 (+160% – 112,000 vs. 43,000).

“World News Tonight” widened its margin over “NBC Nightly News” compared to the year-ago quarter (1Q23) in Total Viewers (+1% – 1.309 million vs. 1.299 million) and Adults 18-49 (+3% – 112,000 vs. 109,000).

“World News Tonight” improved on the previous quarter (4Q23) in Total Viewers (+257,000/+3% – 8.120 million vs. 7.863 million), Adults 25-54 (+29,000/+3% – 1.133 million vs. 1.104 million) and Adults 18-49 (+10,000/+1% – 772,000 vs. 762,000).

For the quarter, “World News Tonight” (8.120 million, 1.133 million and 772,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.969 million, 722,000 and 495,000, respectively) by 3.151 million Total Viewers, by 411,000 Adults 25-54 and by 227,000 Adults 18-49.

“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 newscast on all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.822 million), Adults 25-54 (1.059 million) and Adults 18-49 (698,000) during the week of March 25, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (6.621 million, 923,000 and 586,000, respectively) by 1.201 million Total Viewers, by 136,000 Adults 25-54 and by 112,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.

World News Tonightturned in across-the-board increases week to week: Total Viewers (+4% – 7.822 million vs. 7.532 million), Adults 25-54 (+6% – 1.059 million vs. 1.000 million) and Adults 18-49 (+6% – 698,000 vs. 657,000), drawing its largest overall audience in 4 weeks — since w/o 2/26/24.

“World News Tonight” has won the last 278 of 279 weeks in Total Viewers and 206 of the last 209 in Adults 25-54.

World News Tonightstood as the No. 2 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.822 million) on all of broadcast and cable (excluding sports).

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.001 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 8th straight year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.797 million) by 1.204 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.889 million) by 3.112 million.

“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 5th consecutive season. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC in Adults 25-54 (+95,000 – 1.120 million vs. 1.025 million) and in Adults 18-49 (+78,000 – 768,000 vs. 690,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (702,000 and 478,000, respectively) by 418,000 Adults 25-54 and by 209,000 Adults 18-49.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.822 million, 1.059 million and 698,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.906 million, 715,000 and 472,000, respectively) by 2.916 million Total Viewers, by 344,000 Adults 25-54 and by 226,000 Adults 18-49.

NOTE: On Thursday (3/28/24) and Friday (3/29/24), “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening NWS” due to coverage of the NCAA Basketball Championship. On Friday, “World News Tonight” was retitled to “WNT-ABC” and “NBC Nightly News” was retitled to “NBC Nitely News” due to Good Friday. The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s and NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday), while CBS’ averages are based on three days (Monday-Wednesday).
