For 18th Consecutive Week, ‘World News Tonight With David Muir’ Is the #1 Program on All of Television — #1 Newscast in Total Viewers, Adults 25–54 and Adults 18–49 — Increasing Lead in All Key Demos Year to Year

“World News Tonight with David Muir” finished as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.533 million) on all of television during the week of Aug. 8, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” has ranked as the week’s No. 1 program for 18 weeks in a row (excluding sports).

“World News Tonight” stood as the No. 1 evening newscast in all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.533 million), Adults 25-54 (1.303 million) and Adults 18-49 (903,000), outdelivering “NBC Nightly News” (6.170 million, 1.026 million and 697,000, respectively) by 1.363 million Total Viewers, by 277,000 Adults 25-54 and by 206,000 Adults 18-49.  

“World News Tonight” widened its margins over NBC year to year in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+2% 1.363 million vs. 1.336 million), Adults 25-54 (+18% – 277,000 vs. 235,000) and Adults 18-49 (+45% – 206,000 vs. 142,000).

“World News Tonight” has won the last 193 of 194 weeks in Total Viewers and 122 of the last 124 in Adults 25-54.

“World News Tonight” posted week-to-week gains in Total Viewers (+1%/+96,000 – 7.533 million vs. 7.435 million), Adults 25-54 (+2%/+25,000 – 1.303 million vs. 1.278 million) and Adults 18-49 (+4%/+32,000 – 903,000 vs. 871,000).

On Monday (8/8/22), “World News Tonight” turned in its most-watched telecast (8.082 million) in 3 months — since 5/9/22.

On Tuesday (8/9/22), “World News Tonight” delivered its largest single-day Total Viewer lead over “NBC Nightly News” (1.898 million – 7.940 million vs. 6.042 million) in 4 months — since 4/12/22, based on regular telecasts.

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.226 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 6th consecutive year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.939 million) by 1.287 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.991 million) by 3.235 million.

“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 3rd season in a row. “World News Tonight” is surpassing NBC in both Adults 25-54 (+278,000 – 1.492 million vs. 1.214 million) and Adults 18-49 (+167,000 – 1.021 million vs. 854,000).  In fact, “World News Tonight” is posting its largest Adults 25-54 lead in 26 years — since the 1995-1996 season. In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (846,000 and 590,000, respectively) by 646,000 Adults 25-54 and by 431,000 Adults 18-49.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.533 million, 1.303 million and 903,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.440 million, 715,000 and 469,000, respectively) by 3.093 Total Viewers, by 588,000 Adults 25-54 and by 434,000 Adults 18-49.

NOTE: On Friday (8/12/22), “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws” and “NBC Nightly News” was retitled to “NBC Nitely News.” The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. CBS’ and NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).
