‘World News Tonight With David Muir’ Is the Most-Watched Evening Newscast Across All of Broadcast and Cable TV- Winning in Total Viewers, Adults 25–54 and Adults 18–49

‘World News Tonight’ Is Winning in Total Viewers for the 5th Consecutive Season and in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 2nd Season in a Row

“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast across all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.307 million), Adults 25-54 (1.310 million) and Adults 18-49 (871,000) for the week of May 31, 2021, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (6.326 million, 1.124 million and 771,000, respectively) by 981,000 Total Viewers, by 186,000 Adults 25-54 and by 100,000 Adults 18-49.


“World News Tonight” ranked as the No. 2 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.307 million) on all of television (excluding syndication).  In addition, “World News Tonight” held 5 of the Top 6 telecasts on all television for the week with Thursday (7.655 million – No. 1), Wednesday (7.528 million – No. 2), Tuesday (7.198 – No. 4), Friday (6.687 million – No. 5) and Monday (6.566 million).


“World News Tonight” increased its lead over NBC year to year in Adults 25-54 (+21% – 186,000 vs. 154,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2% – 100,000 vs. 98,000).


“World News Tonight” ranked as the evening’s No. 1 newscast for the last 62 weeks in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49. In addition, “World News Tonight” has won the last 132 weeks overall in Total Viewers.


Season to date, “World News Tonight” (9.086 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 5th consecutive season, based onMost Current Data. In fact, the ABC evening newscast is increasing its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.584 million) from the same point last season (+40% – 1.502 million vs. 1.070 million) to its largest season lead in 26 years—since the 1994-1995 season. “World News Tonight” is beating “CBS Evening News” (5.608 million) by 3.478 million.


“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 2nd season in a row. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC by its largest margin in Adults 25-54 (+285,000 – 1.769 million vs. 1.484 million) in 25 years and in Adults 18-49 (+208,000 – 1.237 million vs. 1.029 million) in 26 years—since the 1995-1996 and the 1994-1995 seasons, respectively.


For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.307 million, 1.310 million and 871,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.878 million, 868,000 and 624,000, respectively) by 2.429 million Total Viewers, by 442,000 Adults 25-54 and by 247,000 Adults 18-49.


NOTE: On Memorial Day (5/31/21), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “Wrld News Tonite-5/31,” “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening News-Mem Day,” and “NBC Nightly News” was retitled to “NBC Nightly News 5/31.”  In addition, on Friday (6/4/21), “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.”  The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages.  ABC’s and NBC’s averages are based on 4 days (Mon-Thurs) and CBS’ averages are based on 3 days (Tues-Thurs).
