2021 NOMINATIONS FAST FACTS:

 

“OLIVIA RODRIGO, THE MOST NOMINATED ARTIST THIS YEAR WITH 7 NODS, COULD RECEIVE THE MOST WINS EVER FOR A FIRST-TIME NOMINEE SHOULD SHE WIN IN AT LEAST 5 CATEGORIES”

  • Rodrigo could take home a staggering seven trophies in her first AMA year, the most for any first-time nominated artist. Olivia Newton-John and Justin Bieber currently hold the record for winning a total of four awards in 1975 and 2010, respectively.

“KACEY MUSGRAVES, GABBY BARRETT, MALUMA, H.E.R., SZA AND JAZMINE SULLIVAN, COULD WIN THEIR FIRST AMA EVER”

  • Musgraves could win in the Favorite Female Country Artist category, which she was previously nominated for in 2014. She will go head to head with Gabby Barrett (also competing for her first AMA ever), Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris and Miranda Lambert.

“THE WEEKND IS THE MOST NOMINATED MALE ARTIST, WITH 6 NOMINATIONS”

  • Five-time AMA winner The Weeknd could bring his total to 11 should he win in all of the categories he is nominated for – Artist of The Year; Favorite Music Video; Favorite Male Pop Artist; Favorite Pop Song; Favorite Male R&B Artist; Favorite Latin Song.

“TAYLOR SWIFT COULD, ONCE AGAIN, BREAK HER OWN RECORD FOR MOST AMA WINS OF ALL TIME”

  • 2020 Artist of the Year Taylor Swift, could break her own record for most AMA wins of all time should she take home at least one of the awards she’s nominated for. She currently holds the record with 32 wins.

“FIRST-TIME NOMINEES DOMINATE THIS YEAR’S AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS, INCLUDING SILK SONIC, SAWEETIE, 24KGOLDN, GIVEON, AND KALI UCHIS”

  • Silk Sonic is nominated for the first time this year, achieving nods in the following categories: Favorite Music Video; Favorite Pop Duo or Group; Favorite R&B Song. A win in any of these categories would mark the first for band member Anderson .Paak, and the 11th for Bruno Mars.

  • Giveon (5), Kali Uchis (3), Silk Sonic (3), 24kGoldn (2), and Saweetie (1) are up for their first AMA and could take home their first trophy on November 21.

“BTS COULD WIN IN THE FAVORITE POP DUO OR GROUP CATEGORY FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW”

  • The group were previously nominated and won in this category in 2019 and 2020.

“FIRST-TIME NOMINEE POP SMOKE COULD WIN HIS FIRST AMA POSTHUMOUSLY”

  • Rapper and singer Pop Smoke, who passed away in February 2020, is nominated in three categories (Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist; Favorite Hip-Hop Album; Favorite Hip-Hop Song) and could win his first AMA ever should he win posthumously.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Taylor Swift is the current record holder for most wins in the Artist of the Year category with six wins. It will be the second win in this category for nominee Ariana Grande should she take home the award, and the first for BTS, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd.

 

COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR
This year 24kGoldn and iann dior are nominated for their hit song “Mood,” alongside Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez for “DÁKITI,” Chris Brown and Young Thug for “Go Crazy,” Doja Cat and SZA for “Kiss Me More,” and Justin Bieber with Daniel Caesar and Giveon for “Peaches.” Last year, Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber took home this award for “10,000 Hours.

 

FAVORITE MUSIC VIDEO
Lionel Richie holds the record for most music video wins (6). Silk Sonic, Cardi B, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd are up for the award this year.

FAVORITE MALE POP ARTIST
Justin Bieber currently holds the record in this category with four wins (2010, 2012, 2016, 2020). This could be the second win in this category for Ed Sheeran, and the first for fellow nominees Drake, Lil Nas X, and The Weeknd

 

FAVORITE FEMALE POP ARTIST
Taylor Swift currently holds the record for most wins in this category with 6. This will be Swift’s seventh win in this category should she take home the award. It will be Ariana Grande’s second win, and the first for Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Olivia Rodrigo.

 

FAVORITE POP DUO OR GROUP
One Direction, Aerosmith and Black Eyed Peas lead with 3 wins each in this category. It would be their third win in this category should BTS take home the award, having previously won in 2019 and 2020. It would be the third win for Maroon 5 in this category should they take home the trophy, and the first for AJR, Glass Animals, and Silk Sonic.

 

FAVORITE POP ALBUM
Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are the current record holders for most wins in the Favorite Pop Album category with 3 wins each. Swift could take home her fourth award in this category, breaking Jackson and Bieber’s record. It would be the first win in this category for Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Kid LAROI.

 

FAVORITE POP SONG
Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and Lionel Richie are tied for the most wins in this category with 2 each. Dua Lipa could tie for the record should she take the award this year, having previously won in 2020. This will be the first win in this category for BTS (“Butter”), Doja Cat ft. SZA (“Kiss Me More”), Olivia Rodrigo (“drivers license”), and The Weeknd & Ariana Grande (“Save Your Tears (Remix)”.

FAVORITE MALE COUNTRY ARTIST
Garth Brooks is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Male Country Artist category with 8 wins. This would be Luke Bryan’s fifth time taking home the award in this category should he win; and the first win for Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, and Luke Combs.

 

FAVORITE FEMALE COUNTRY ARTIST
Reba McEntire is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Female Country Artist category with 11 wins. This would be the seventh win for Carrie Underwood in this category, and the second for Maren Morris should either of them win. Gabby Barrett, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgravges could win their first AMA ever should any of them win this category.

 

FAVORITE COUNTRY DUO OR GROUP
Alabama is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Country Duo or Group category with 17 wins.  Florida Georgia Line could win for a fifth time in this category, and Dan + Shay their third should they take home the award this year. Lady A, Old Dominion, and Zac Brown Band could win their first AMA ever, should they take home the award this year.

 

FAVORITE COUNTRY ALBUM
Carrie Underwood and Kenny Rogers are currently tied for the most wins in this category with 5 each. It would be the first win in this category for all artists nominated this year: Chris Stapleton, Gabby Barrett, Lee Brice, Luke Bryan, and Morgan Wallen.

 

FAVORITE COUNTRY SONG
Kenny Rogers leads in this category with 5 all-time wins. It would be Kane Brown’s second win in this category, and the first for nominees Chris Stapleton, Chris Young, Gabby Barrett, Luke Combs, and Walker Hayes.

FAVORITE HIP-HOP ALBUM
Nicki Minaj is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Hip-Hop Album category with 3 wins.  This would be Drake’s second win in this category should he win, and a first win for nominees Juice WRLD, Megan Thee Stallion, Pop Smoke, and Rod Wave.

 

FAVORITE HIP-HOP SONG
Drake received the first ever win in this category for his hit, “Hotline Bling,” when it was introduced in 2016. Cardi B could win her third trophy in this category should she win for her hit song “Up.”  Other 2021 nominees include Internet Money ft. Gunna, Don Toliver & NAV (“Lemonade”),  Lil Tjay ft. 6LACK (“Calling My Phone”), Polo G (“RAPSTAR”) and  Pop Smoke (“What You Know Bout Love”).

 

FAVORITE MALE R&B ARTIST
Luther Vandross is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Male R&B Artist category with 7 wins. It could be the fourth win for Usher in this category, and the third for The Weeknd and Chris Brown. This would be Giveon and Tank’s first win in this category.

 

FAVORITE FEMALE R&B ARTIST
Rihanna is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Female R&B Artist category with 7 wins. It would be the second win in this category for Doja Cat, and the first for H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, Jhené Aiko, and SZA should either of them take home the awards.

FAVORITE R&B ALBUM
Michael Jackson leads the Favorite R&B Album category with 4 all-time wins. It would be the first win in this category for Doja Cat, Giveon, H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, and Queen Naija.

FAVORITE R&B SONG
Michael Jackson holds the record for most wins (3) in this category. Chris Brown is nominated in this category for the first time for his collaboration with Young Thug (“Go Crazy”). It would be the first win in this category for Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak), Giveon, H.E.R., and Jazmine Sullivan.

 

FAVORITE ROCK ARTIST
Linkin Park is the current record holder for most wins in the Favorite Rock Artist category with 6 wins. It would be Foo Fighters’ second win in this category, having previously won in 2011. It would be the first win in this category for all the other nominated artists this year: AJR, All Time Low, Glass Animals, and Machine Gun Kelly.

 

FAVORITE LATIN ARTIST
Enrique Iglesias is the current record holder for the Favorite Latin Artist category with 8 wins. The Latin categories were expanded in 2020 to include Favorite Male Latin Artist, Favorite Female Latin Artist, Favorite Latin Song, and Favorite Latin Album. Bad Bunny could win for the second time in the Favorite Male Latin Artist category, while Becky G could also take her second trophy in the Favorite Female Latin Artist category.

 

FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL ARTIST
Casting Crowns and Lauren Daigle are currently tied in this category with four wins each. Daigle has won in this category four years in a row (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020) and could win for a fifth time this year, breaking the tie. This would be the first win in this category for CAIN, Carrie Underwood, Elevation Worship, and Zach Williams.

FAVORITE DANCE/ELECTRONIC ARTIST
Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers and Marshmello are tied for the most wins in the Favorite Dance/Electronic Artist category with 2 wins each. Should Marshmello win this year, he will surpass Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers for most wins ever in this category. This would be David Guetta’s second win in this category, and the first for ILLENIUM, Regard and Tiësto.

  1. Taylor Swift – 32 wins total, the most AMA wins of any artist in history; Leads the Artist of the Year category with 6 wins; Won Dick Clark Award for Excellence in 2014, and the Artist of the Decade Award in 2019.

  2. Michael Jackson – 24 wins total; Leads the Favorite Album – Pop/Rock category with 3 wins; Leads the Favorite Album – Soul/R&B category with 4 wins; Leads the Favorite Single – Soul/R&B category with 3 wins; Won the Award of Achievement in 1989 and Artist of the Century in 2002.

  3. Alabama – 23 wins total; Leads the Favorite Duo or Group – Country category with 17 wins, 14 of which are consecutive from 1983-1996.
